Is that Michelle Pfeiffer or Stiffler’s mum? Why is Elle Fanning rolling around on the floor of Bloomingdale’s, heavily pregnant? And what are those ‘educational videos’ she’s filming that are definitely not for OnlyFans?

Those are just some of the questions you’ll have after watching the brilliantly chaotic first teaser for Apple TV’s anticipated new series Margo’s Got Troubles, which debuted today.

Those who have read Rufi Thorpe’s best-selling novel of the same name will already be familiar with the plot, but for the uninitiated, here’s the wild ride you’re in for…

Told across eight episodes, the series follows recent college dropout and aspiring writer Margo (Fanning), who’s forced to find her own way in the world with a new baby and mounting piles of bills with little resources.

The trailer opens with Margo exclaiming ‘oh f**k’ after three pregnancy tests confirm she is indeed with child. Overwhelmed by looming motherhood, Margo is then seen lying on the floor of Bloomies as her straight-talking mother, former Hooter’s waitress, Shayanne, tells her: ‘Get yourself back up off the floor, young lady. There are no victims in Bloomingdale’s.’ Words to live by!

With the cost of nappies stacking up and the lack of income, Margo finds inspiration online and turns to making OnlyFans videos before seeing the tips start to roll in.

‘What are you doing in there?’ her pro-wrestler father, Jinx (Nick Offerman), asks a little perturbed.

‘We’re making educational videos,’ Margo replies unconvincingly, although it does seem to convince her father.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles also stars Nicole Kidman, Marcia Gay Harden and Greg Kinnear, making for a pretty stellar cast.

The novel was released in 2024 and immediately picked up a buzz with Hollywood filmmakers desperate to land rights for the adaptation.

Elle, whose production company Lewellen Pictures is one of the companies behind the adaptation, won the war after reading the book and meeting with author Thorpe.

‘I got my hands on [the book] and got to read it early on and was so taken with it. I could see how it could be made into just a fantastic show,’the actress recently told Elle.

She added: ‘When you read the book, you just fall in love so much with these characters – they’re so vividly drawn. I felt, like, “Okay. We’re going to get… an amazing group is going to want to play these characters, because they’re all so specific and fun”.’

Oscar-winner Kidman makes just a brief appearance in the trailer, but it’s believed her character will get a broader exploration on-screen than in the book as an ex-pro wrestler, friend of Jinx and a custody lawyer.

As for the OnlyFans arc, Elle says the TV adaptation will offer a fresh perspective on how creators use the platform outside of its seedy reputation.

‘I think the way that we talk about OnlyFans – and the way that it’s represented in the show – is that it’s a real creative outlet for Margo,’ she told the publication. ‘It’s something that actually frees her and helps her when she’s at her lowest point, which is really a beautiful thing.’
