Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, called President Donald Trump’s endorsement of Senator Lindsey Graham “nauseating,” in a Saturday X post.

Newsweek has reached out to Graham’s press team for comment via email on Saturday.

Why It Matters

Trump’s war with Iran—and particularly his threat earlier this week that an entire civilization could be obliterated if Tehran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz—has deepened divisions within the MAGA movement, prompting some conservative allies to publicly denounce the president.

Greene’s post came shortly after she framed the upcoming midterms as a battle between "new" and "old" MAGA, claiming the faces that have risen to prominence in recent months for the movement will prove ineffective in helping the Republicans through a potentially rocky election.

Recent splits with high‑profile conservative figures such as Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, and Candace Owens highlight how loyalty to Trump increasingly defines MAGA over some “America First” stances and political ideology. The MAGA movement had already shown signs of strain over the Jeffrey Epstein files and Trump’s intervention in Venezuela, but the Iran war appears to have opened a far wider rift.

What To Know

In a Friday Truth Social post, the president praised Graham, a South Carolina Republican, saying he “is doing a fantastic job.” Trump described the senator's opponent, Republican Mark Lynch, a “LUNATIC,” who “would be a DISASTER for the Republican Party.” The president, who has previously endorsed Graham’s campaigns, again backed him ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

Graham has been one of Trump’s more outspoken Republican supporters on his Iran agenda. Graham is in his fourth term in the Senate after serving four terms in the House.

In response to Trump’s post, Greene wrote an X post taking aim at Graham’s support for foreign intervention and what she cast as a retreat from “America First” priorities, writing, “Graham is exactly what Americans voted to get rid of in 2024, but Trump fights tooth and nail to protect.”

Greene left Congress in January after a public break with Trump over the Epstein files and has since been vocal against the president, particularly regarding foreign intervention.

She continued on X on Saturday: “The vast majority of Trump’s endorsements are for politicians that always protect the swamp establishment and the deep state.”

The former congresswoman continued: “Open your eyes and get out of the cult. The Trump endorsement should be a warning label proving that candidate will obey the very system that you hate and will be most likely funded by AIPAC which promotes Israel’s interest over America. Vote for candidates that are America FIRST!!!”

Greene's comments come as political parties ramp up for the midterm elections at the state, local and federal levels. The party that controls the White House often loses seats in midterm elections, and Democrats’ recent gains in several special elections appear to have added to Republican concerns, along with potential internal party fissures.

What People Are Saying

Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, said in a March 26, 2025, X post: “President Trump’s endorsement means the world to me. I am humbled by his faith in me as a Senator and as a friend. On a professional level, I am proud to have been there at the beginning when President Trump — through sheer force of will —achieved the greatest political comeback in American history. On a personal level, I genuinely enjoy our friendship. He’s an awesome golfing buddy, who I have yet to beat. I look forward to being one of the driving forces in the U.S. Senate to enact President Trump’s agenda to make America more prosperous and more secure.”

President Donald Trump said in a Thursday Truth Social post: "I know why Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, and Alex Jones have all been fighting me for years, especially by the fact that they think it is wonderful for Iran, the Number One State Sponsor of Terror, to have a Nuclear Weapon — Because they have one thing in common, Low IQs. They’re stupid people, they know it, their families know it, and everyone else knows it, too! Look at their past, look at their record. They don’t have what it takes, and they never did! They’ve all been thrown off Television, lost their Shows, and aren’t even invited on TV because nobody cares about them, they’re NUT JOBS, TROUBLEMAKERS, and will say anything necessary for some “free” and cheap publicity. Now they think they get some “clicks” because they have Third Rate Podcasts, but nobody’s talking about them, and their views are the opposite of MAGA — Or I wouldn’t have won the Presidential Election in a LANDSLIDE."

Republican candidate Mark Lynch said in an April 10 X post: "Lindsey Graham has betrayed South Carolinians for over 30 years, and they know it. That’s why he was booed for seven minutes straight in Pickens. On June 9th, South Carolinians will replace this feckless, war-mongering traitor!"

What Happens Next

The South Carolina U.S. Senate primary is scheduled for June 9, with the general election on November 3.
