...With Grand Theft Auto 6 just months away from its highly anticipated release, Rockstar Games is dealing with an unwelcome distraction.
The developer has confirmed that company data was accessed as part of a third-party data breach on Saturday and a hacker group is now demanding a ransom with a deadline of April 14.
In a statement issued to IGN, a Rockstar Games spokesperson confirmed the breach but moved quickly to downplay its significance.
"We can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach. This incident has no impact on our organization or our players," the statement read.
So how did it happen? According to reporting from The CyberSec Guru, a hacker group called ShinyHunters exploited Anodot, a cloud-cost monitoring tool that Rockstar uses, to gain access to the company's Snowflake data warehouse. The hackers obtained authentication tokens through Anodot's system and used them as a digital passkey to get inside.
...ShinyHunters has since issued a blunt ransom demand, warning Rockstar to "pay or leak" before Tuesday, April 14, threatening to release the stolen data alongside what they described as "several annoying (digital) problems."
The big question on everyone's mind is whether any GTA 6 material was compromised and the game will be delayed.
“Inside job to keep delaying the game,” one Redditor claimed.
Another wrote, “If these hackers delay this game..oh man…."
“Why cant hackers do something useful and good for the world like hacking the american govt,” a third quipped.
Rockstar's insistence that the stolen information is "non-material" and that neither players nor the company's plans are affected suggests the developer isn't worried about a damaging leak ahead of the game's launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
The game was initially supposed to be released in 2025, but got pushed to May 2026 due to developers needing more time to wrap up lose ends. As it stands currently, the game will be released November 19, 2026.
