Emmerdale’s never been afraid to tackle big issues that impact millions. Now it’s taking on the dark side of AI, as Dales favourite Kerry Wyatt finds herself embroiled in an online scam. Actor Laura Norton spills the tea.

‘It’s scary, isn’t it?’ Laura asks, sharing her own experience with online scams in a recent chat with Metro. ‘There’s things sometimes that I look at on the internet and I can’t tell. I’m literally asking people ‘’is that real?’ It’s so clever.’

‘My dad was going on about getting scammed the other day. There’s this thing where someone will get a text and it will say ‘hi dad, texting you on someone else’s number because my phone’s broke’. Because it says Dad, they automatically assume that it’s you and respond asking you what you need help with. For my parents watching, it’s the little things to be aware of really wary of this so you can say ‘I saw this on telly. Actually I’m going to be really wary of this.’ Of course it’s hugely important.’

It’s hard to imagine a better character to tell an online scamming story with than Kerry. Although she’s got a heart of gold and would do anything for her nearest and dearest, chaos follows her like a Sugden’s farm sheep and she’s not above the odd petty scheme – especially if someone’s got it coming.

This makes her the perfect partner for Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell), her mentor and husband. Although it was a marriage for tax purposes to ensure his grandson Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) was protected from care home fees after his death, Pollard has taken a genuine liking to Kerry.

Even though there’s no romantic feelings there, he was jealous she started seeing her boss Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson), and reluctantly gave his blessing. Thus began the weirdest love triangle in the Dales.

The scam story kicks off in upcoming scenes of Emmerdale, when Jai goes away, leaving Kerry’s mate and colleague  Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) to help Caleb Miligan (William Ash) drum up business. While Caleb’s impressed to see Billy secure a client, Kerry feels overlooked.

Laura explains why her character feels so slighted by Billy’s efforts being noticed over her own. ‘When Kerry and Jai first became a thing, she was always sticking up for Billy, like she had his back, and also Caleb used Kerry a few times, he gave her a promotion, but I think that was actually just to annoy Jai. So she kind of thought that Caleb held her in a bit higher regard than he actually does. She starts to realise and she is really irritated by it.’

But Kerry’s day goes from bad to worse when she leaves to pick up Jai’s son Archie Breckle (Kai Assi), only to have her work ethic questioned by Caleb.

‘It stings.’ Laura admits. ‘She would always put anything above work that’s more important and is always trying to explain the reason why and he’s at that stage where he’s just like ‘its not good enough’. That’s a little bit of old her creeping in. She has been soldiering the responsibility of looking after her boyfriend’s son, at the same time.’

Then Caleb seemingly gets a call from his daughter Steph (Georgina Jay) asking for money. He gives Billy his bank account password and asks him to secretly transfer £5,000 for a deposit on a London flat. Meanwhile, Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) and Ruby discuss their children, with Ruby (Beth Cordingly) mentioning that, Steph, is in Thailand with her new boyfriend.

As Kerry begrudgingly heads back to work from Farrers, Archie listens to an AI copy of Steph’s voice that he’s made. When £5000 lands in his account it becomes obvious that he was the one who scammed Caleb…

The next day, Kerry delivers a computer Archie ordered with Caleb’s money, making her suspicious. Kerry’s suspicion of Archie grows and soon she catches him with an AI copy of Steph’s voice. How does Kerry react?

‘She’s very confused. ‘ Laurea shares. ‘They have a big to-do about it. She pulls him on it, and there’s a bit of a to-do where she’s trying to get him to explain what’s going on because she’s really freaked out about it. She thinks it’s really weird or creepy and she can’t work it out so she really slams her foot down on it to try and get him to explain to her what’s going on. And obviously he doesn’t immediately tell her the truth, she has to chase around and work it all out for herself.’

Kerry heads to Caleb’s office to reveal the truth. But when Caleb is dismissive and patronising, Kerry decides not to expose Archie’s scam and tells a shocked Archie she wants to split the money instead.

Laura Norton shares light on Kerry’s decision.’This is where old school Kerry kicks in. She’s been triggered. Instead of doing the right thing, which she fully intended to do, she charges down to go and see him and tell him what’s going on. He was so rude to her and wouldn’t let her speak. She does it out of spite. She knows it’s wrong but she’s like ‘do you know what? If you’re going to speak to me like that, you can get lost. I was going to try and help you but now you can have a taste of your own medicine’.

Caleb is not the kind of man who takes kindly to a taste of his own medicine. Will he discover Kerry’s fraud? Laura teases the consequences.

‘It’s a bit dodgy, isn’t it, because God only knows where this is going to go. She’s not clever enough to pull something like this off, and he’s not going to take it lightly, is he?’

While Caleb’s sure to go on a rampage of revenge, there are millions of people who get scammed every day who are left with no recourse and no way of getting their money back. Laura outlines her hopes for anyone who worries they or someone they know might be a victim of a scam.

‘Ring a family member. My sister’s always saying to my dad ‘that’s dodgy.’

‘When you’ve got your wits about you. That’s probably what this story will help. People will recognise little signs and see that it’s a bit dodgy.’
