When it comes to sex, more often than not, women are the noisier ones in the bedroom.

A poll by sex toy brand Lovehoney previously revealed that 94% of women felt they were louder during sex than their partners, and 70% of men agreed this was the case.

The proper scientific term for sex noises is ‘copulatory vocalisations’, and many women are fed up with being the only one making a racket, and wish their partner would give it a go too.

And it seems it would be beneficial for guys to take note, as some ladies say hearing a man moan is ‘the sexiest thing ever’ and makes them ‘instantly wet’.

What women think

Women have taken to Reddit to share their thoughts on the topic, with one, known as u/Elegant_Analyst_4976, writing: ‘I love hearing [my partner] enjoying himself and the ruggedness of his groan. Gets me even more riled too.’

Similarly, another said: ‘It’s sexy to hear that they’re enjoying it, and I find silent sex really awkward. I’m loud, and I’d like them to be loud too.

‘Wish more men were confident letting themselves go that way.’

And u/Accomplished-Bit-884, proclaimed: ‘Any noise from a guy is so f***ing hot.’

While u/nikolebakerbaker shared: ‘I had to tell my partner that I desire to hear him moan and to know he doesn’t have to “be quiet” or hold it in.

‘Sexy man moans are the bessssssssssst. Instantly wet.’

u/Linorelai claimed growling was the ‘second sexiest male sound in the world’, following closely behind ‘honey, I did the dishes’.

Others said there was ‘nothing hotter’ and that they liked men moaning as it is ‘kind of vulnerable’ and they found that vulnerability ‘so sexy’.

Why are men keeping quiet?

Men had mixed feelings on the matter, with some claiming they stayed quiet because that’s what they were used to seeing in porn, and making noise made them feel ‘like an idiot’.

While several admitted they were silent in order to ‘concentrate’ on lasting longer, so their partner could finish too.

A man known only as u/RobinGood94 shared: ‘I am focused on not getting mentally sidetracked. I have a boner to maintain, so typically I am the one doing lots of thrusts and such. Feels great, but not typically moan-worthy.

‘You know when you get a genuinely warm welcome but eventually settle into normalcy once inside? That’s how intercourse feels.

‘The things that genuinely make me moan aren’t usually the main course of our interaction.’

An expert weighs in…

Metro spoke to Tiff Hudson, a BACP registered therapist, about why women love to hear men moan, and how you can give it a go.

‘Many women find it a turn on when a partner makes noise during sex because it’s clear, audible evidence that they’re enjoying themselves,’ Tiff explains.

‘Hearing a partner’s breath, sighs, or moans is unambiguous, in-the-moment evidence that what’s happening feels good.

‘Non-verbal cues reduce guesswork, build confidence, and help everyone adjust touch, pace, and pressure accordingly.’

The sounds also help to deepen the connection you have with your partner, as they’re a sign of presence, safety, and trust.

‘When people stop trying to manage how they come across and let themselves be felt and heard, sex becomes more collaborative, attuned, and intimate,’ Tiff continues.

‘Allowing yourself to be seen enjoying pleasure also communicates comfort, consent, and reciprocity. That sense of mutual safety is a major driver of desire across orientations and genders.’

As for how men can feel more confident making noise, Tiff encourages them to ‘start small and real’.

Avoid performance theatrics; instead, let natural changes in your breathing lead you. This could mean slower inhales, longer exhales, and maybe a ‘mmm’ when something lands.

‘Pair this sound with consent and feedback,’ urges the expert. ‘Try simple lines like “right there”, “more of that”, or “yes”.

‘Blending words and sound can feel less exposed at first and still conveys pleasure.’

And if you’re still nervous, practice outside the bedroom, during solo play. Notice what sounds want to emerge and let them.

According to Tiff, this builds a body-memory of relaxed vocalising, so it’ll be easier when you’re with a partner.

She adds: ‘Sound is information, intimacy, and invitation. When people allow themselves to be heard enjoying sex, partners feel more connected and better guided, and that’s what many find irresistibly hot.’
