The San Francisco 49ers will have All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams for at least the upcoming season.

Williams, 37, signed a two-year contract worth $50 million. The 2010 first-round pick by the Washington Commanders has been a key part of the 49ers' offense since he joined the team in 2020.

On Wednesday, Williams told reporters that he'll "probably" call it quits in the NFL after the 2026 campaign. He could be looking to spend more time with his family in retirement.

“I’m toying between the idea of going until I can’t no more and just leaving while I’ve still got some good product left and I get ran out of the league,” Williams said, via Pro Football Talk. “It’s been a long time.

"I had a daughter that she was born three months before I got drafted, so I’m going on year 17 and she’s turning 17. As a father, you feel like I’ve kind of felt like I missed her whole life.”

Williams has shown no signs of slowing down despite his increasing age, earning his 12th Pro Bowl nomination last season. While he's with the 49ers this season, he intends to make the most of what could be his final year in the league.

“There’s little stuff I’ve got to think about,” Williams said. “Obviously, I can’t tell the future. I don’t know. I’m still a competitor. It’s hard not to compete when you can, so we’ll see.”

The 49ers do a succession plan at left tackle for when Williams decides to retire. San Francisco signed Vederian Lowe to a two-year contract this offseason, and could serve as a swing tackle for Williams and Colton McKivitz this fall.

The 49ers selected Enrique Cruz out of Kansas in the fifth round of April's draft, giving the team another option at left tackle for the 2027 campaign.

Still, it will be hard, if not impossible, to replace Williams when he decides to retire.
