The answers to today's Strands, game #823, are…

  • GRACE
  • EASE
  • POISE
  • APLOMB
  • STYLE
  • COMPOSURE
  • SPANGRAM: POETRYINMOTION
  • My rating: Easy
  • My score: Perfect

When you spot a non-game word as good as POETRY the chances are that it is part of a longer spangram and so it proved today with the addition of INMOTION.

I also managed to spot a full set of non-game words beginning with the letter P and could have come up with a few more I’m sure, but there was only one P-word among our six descriptors of elegant movement.

APLOMB is one of my favorite words, and one that is often used to describe moments of sporting excellence, usually by Lionel Messi, but to my mind it has to carry a bit of insolence along with the panache.

A better example would be the character of Beth in The Queen’s Gambit as she navigates a male-dominated world and destroys her opponents with casual cool. That said, when I first heard it I thought it was odd that people were delivering things with a plum.

Johnny is a freelance pop culture journalist who has been writing about the internet, music, football and famous people since the iPhone was just a twinkle in Steve Jobs' eye. Previously known by the pseudonym the Pop Detective, his journalistic career began making up stories about Madonna's addiction to sausage rolls (this is not true by the way). A man of few talents, his career is rich and various and includes the highs of interviewing Elton John and Blur; and the lows of interviewing Right Said Fred, appearing on a Channel 5 documentary about Peter Kay, and fact-checking the instruction manual for a German cooker. Somehow still affording to live in North London he is at his happiest riding his bicycle and shouting at pigeons.
