'Shoplifters being allowed to leave stores unaccosted'
What a wonderful country the UK has become. We hear about shoplifters being allowed to leave stores unaccosted – and it’s no wonder when you read stories like the one about the unfortunate 62-year-old train conductor who got punched in the face and lost a tooth for asking fare evader Finley Seggie, 21, to leave the train (Metro paper, Mon).
And the miscreant’s ‘punishment’? Yep, a suspended sentence! Where is the deterrent for such antisocial behaviour? Craig Wilcox, Surrey
Why do people deny climate change?
Geoff (MetroTalk, Fri) wrote about the leaked MI5 National Security Assessment predicting a ‘strategic risk of catastrophic failure’ of Britain’s food security by 2030, caused by climate change, habitat loss and geopolitical uncertainty.
Then Hanna (MetroTalk, Mon) asked for more school education about caring for the environment and other people, aiming to curb the rise of litter and the recent damage to London’s wildlife ponds.
There are connections behind both, in our rising global human population, a throwaway economic culture and demands we expand our oil uses and acquisitions no matter what.
All of us who still have any money to spend are caught in a rut of consumption, much of it with in-built obsolescence and multiple plastic accessories, wrapped in more plastic. We need to confront our climate change/fossil fuelling/wasteful habits, on a domestic, economic and a governmental scale.
When I hear voices pushing for climate change denial and an acceleration of the things that make it worse, I tend to look at just who is saying it and consider why.
In three-and-a-half years, these weather changes that no one can now deny may impact on the production of bread, potatoes… These risks will definitely happen, it’s just a question of when.
The worst of us will say, ‘Too late now!’ I say, it’s never too late – if we love our children and the planet, we have to try our best. Judy Baldwinson, via email
What’s the problem with having things 15 minutes from where you live?
In response to Julian and Stephen’s comments against ‘15-minute cities’ (MetroTalk, Tue). I don’t understand the problem with having the things we need within 15 minutes from where you live.
Nobody is saying you can’t go outside of these distances (this claim is the reason people are being branded far-right and/or conspiracy theorists for claiming they do), it is just that the things we require are easily accessible if we need them.

‘Great article about Britain’s lost music pubs’
Great article about Britain’s lost music pubs (Metro paper, Tue). I had to do a double take when I saw the picture of Steve Marriott, thinking it was Paul Weller. More evidence he was the original Modfather.
