A rescue organization in Ireland found a dog left outside its facility with a note, leaving the staff heartbroken about situation and the message containing little information about the canine herself.

A May 28 Facebook video posted by Dundalk Dog Rescue (DDR) shows a staff member filming the discovery while walking into the building. Security footage later revealed the dog had been left outside at around 5:45 a.m. The dog, named Hope, remained low to the ground, seemingly scared as she avoided eye contact. Whoever dumped the dog left only a water bowl and an unsigned note.

While the note explained aspects of the owner's situation, it offered few details about Hope's history, personality, health or needs, leaving rescuers with "no way to know their story." As a result, the volunteer-run rescue is starting from scratch as it works to find Hope a forever home.

However, there are additional hurdles to overcome. The post explained that under Irish law, a lost or abandoned dog without signed paperwork must go through the pound system. Hope completed her stray hold at the pound and is officially back with DDR.

"Hope is a little unsettled as to be expected, but nothing we haven't seen or dealt with before," Pam with Dundalk Dog Rescue told Newsweek via Facebook.

For now, Hope will be given the time, space and comfort to decompress. The team wants Hope to settle into her new routine at the shelter, which will give them time to learn more about the dog's personality, needs and temperament.

By Thursday, Hope had received no adoption offers, though Pam said the team is still getting to know her, and emphasized the lack of information in the note means staff must observe and assess her behavior firsthand.

"The next move will be to find a suitable forever home matched to her needs," she said. "…We just want to focus on Hope—her welfare and future is our only goal."

A Difficult Reality for Shelters

Dogs are sometimes abandoned outside shelters when owners feel they have no other option. Financial hardship, housing issues, illness, family crises and behavioral challenges can all contribute to pet relinquishment, even when owners care deeply about their animals.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says shelters play a vital role in helping both animals and owners during difficult circumstances. In addition to caring for surrendered pets, the organization encourages shelters and rescues to provide support and resources that may help families keep their animals whenever possible, while ensuring pets that do enter the shelter system receive appropriate care and the best chance of a positive outcome.

Animal welfare organizations urge people struggling with a pet to seek help rather than leaving animals unattended. Dogs abandoned outdoors can face risks including injury, exposure to the elements and significant stress.
