A fortnight on a Greek island throwing hedonistic parties every other evening? if this is how middle-aged friends holiday together, I chose the wrong group. Then again, even paradise can descend into hell when the smiles and niceties wear thin, revealing the rifts, resentments and regrets in all their ugliness, lurking just beneath.
You can watch Two Weeks in August online from anywhere with a VPN and potentially for free.
Teacher Zoe (Jessica Raine) can't really afford the trip, but seizes it as an opportunity to temporarily – maybe – relieve herself of her duties to her depressive husband Dan (Damien Molony), their young children and her ageing parents. That Dan and their kids are in tow, however, may prove something of a hitch.
Actor Solomon (Nicholas Pinnock) and entrepreneur Jess (Antonia Thomas) embody the power couple ideal, but up-close it seems their primary shared value is self-absorption. Best friends Nat (Leila Farzad) and Jacob (Hugh Skinner), having neglected each other in favour of work in Nat's case, and a relationship with Will (Dylan Brady) in Jacobs's, come to realise what they've been missing.
Although Jacob's baggage literally turns up on the island uninvited, it's those who've freed themselves of their shackles that end up inflicting the worst damage. And the island itself has an uncanny knack for reflecting everybody's inner turmoil back at them.
