How many more chances will Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) give her no-good son Carl Webster? (Jonathan Howard). Here’s a clue – zero. Tonight on Coronation Street, the Worst Webster finally burnt his last bridge.
‘Carl Webster is a wrong’un’ has been one of Corrie’s most frustrating storylines. Greatest hits include wrecking his brother Kevin’s (Michael Le Vell) marriage by seducing his wife Abi (Sally Carman-Duttine) only to do the dirty on her when their relationship got boring, and causing the hit-and-run that put Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) in a wheelchair.
But the cherry on top of the bad boy sundae has to be the Corriedale crash. Not only did Carl’s drunken driving result in a multi-car pileup that claimed the life of Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank), but he slid poor, dementia-stricken Debbie Webster into the driving seat and gaslit her into taking the blame.
Now you could argue the whole ‘Debbie is not Carl’s sister, but actually his mum’ reveal excuses his actions somewhat. To a point. Certainly not enough to justify the total sleazebag watching his mum plead guilty for his crime and go to prison, where her dementia suffered a speedy decline.

You would think that as soon as Debbie was released, Carl would be desperate to mend his ways and repair his relationship with his mum. If you think that, you haven’t watched enough Corrie.
No sooner was Debbie released, the mooching fruit of her loins was already sniffing around looking for a handout, to bail him out of debts caused by his terrible life choices.
Because she pretended to be his sister his whole life, Debbie feels guilty and therefore feels unable to say no to Carl.

Fortunately, nobody else on Coronation Street has that problem.
Take Debbie’s husband Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan), for example. He can see right through Carl’s doting son routine. All that man wants is to get his grubby mitts on Debbie’s prized Chariot Square Hotel, so he can treat it like his own personal piggy bank. That’s why he’s joined forces with Kevin to get rid of Carl for good.

Despite their warnings, Debbie has stood by Carl every step of the way… until now.
Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) had already confronted Debbie with her suspicions that Carl was involved in the crash somehow, and it killed Debbie to lie to her.

So when Carl offered to reveal who was to blame for Billy’s death in exchange for £10,000 , it was the straw that broke the camel’s back for a disgusted Deb.

Sick and tired of the emotional toll Carl’s behaviour was taken on Debbie, Ronnie had already warned Carl to leave Weatherfield once, and he didn’t listen. Enough was enough, and on Sunday, was pushed to breaking point when he punched Carl and left him lying on the Cobbles…
While Ronnie gave Carl a punch to the face, he wasn’t trying to seriously hurt him… which made it all the more shocking in tonight’s episode of Coronation Street when a horrified Debbie got a call from the hospital notifying her that Carl is in A&E.

Debbie may have been furious with Ronnie, but she saved some for Carl when she stormed into hospital to confront him. The slimy toad was quick to use the attack to his advantage, painting himself to be the victim of Ronnie’s vengeful vendetta. To Carl’s annoyance, Debbie sided with Ronnie and reminder her son that he was far from blameless.
Even though she went to prison to save his neck, Carl laughed that it’s not even a drop in the bucket after hiding the truth about his parentage for all these years. To the cheers of an entire Corrie-watching nation, Debbie refused to be half responsible for all the pain in his life and reminded him of his promise to be there for her ’til the bitter end.’ The heartfelt speech did not move Carl, who threatened to report Ronnie for assault.
In this moment, the scales finally fell from Debbie’s eyes as she realised that her boy is truly beyond redemption. ‘You are capable of change, you know. You just don’t want to, do you?’

She then called time on their mother/son relationship for good with the kind of absolutely savage yet heartbreaking dialogue that makes Corrie shine.
‘Do you know what, Carl? I think that’s a blessing now. Because one day, I might not remember that you’re my son. But at least I won’t be ashamed of you!’
This almost reduced Carl for tears. But his heartache soon turned bitter when he sunk to a new low – by blackmailing his own mother ‘Unless you want to spend what limited time you have left talking to Ronnie behind glass, you’re going to have to give up what you truly love.’ He threatened.

Debbie may be done with Carl. But is Carl done with her? We already know that the two-faced slimeball will go to any lengths to get cash. Unfortunately for Carl, he could not have picked a worse time to be evil on Coronation Street. Death is coming to Weatherfield, and he is one of the potential victims.
